Case Study: Boodarie HBI Closure Project

The closure of the Boodarie Iron Hot Briquetted Iron plant at South Headland, Western Australia is the largest, most complex and technically challenging demolition project to have been undertaken in Australia in the last 15 years.

Liberty Industrial was employed on the strength of our reputation for large scale projects to safely demolish and remove this highly complex and challenging facility.

The structures varied in size from the gas plant and stack (105 metre), the briquetting structure (65 metre) high and the reactor structure (105 metre) high. In total the scrap ferrous materials generated during the project totalled an incredible 25,000 tonnes and took a team of 35 personnel 12 months to complete.

To make the project even more complex, the plant housed Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) a residual material that is extremely volatile and potentially explosive. The structures were also extremely difficult to weaken because they were cyclone rated and designed to withstand 200km/h winds.

The briquetting structure was demolished in two stages and the large reactor building was induced collapsed in one sequence utilising explosive cutting charges to complete the final cuts and bring the structure to the ground in a safe and controlled manner.

In order to complete the largest project yet undertaken in the southern hemisphere we used the largest demolition excavator in Australia: a Liebherr 994 (230 tonne) complete with the largest set of grapple attachments ever made by Embrey’s Australia (14 tonne). We also used an EX1200 Hitachi (120 tonne) and a series of 46 tonne and 36 tonne Volvo processing excavators all equipped with shear and grapple attachments.

This high profile project is a landmark facility for the Pilbara region of Western Australia and one that is within our client’s top 10 world-wide risks.
