This project involved the demolition and remediation of the former Caltex Depot at Mareeba including the removal of five above storage tanks, the demolition of the amenities, drum store and tanker refuelling gantry. The work also involved the removal of bonded asbestos contaminated materials, the disconnection of services, the removal of all hardstand and the excavation and disposal to landfill of hydrocarbon contaminated soils as required.

The scope of work included the removal of:

  • An office building in the north-east of the site
  • One diesel bowser present in the north-east of the site, beneath a 3.2 metre (m) high canopy
  • A raised oil storage shed in the central northern portion of the site with a small shelter to the west
  • An oil/water separator pit was present in the north-western corner of the site
  • A concrete bund area for drum storage within the south west corner of the site
  • A roofed concrete slab and truck loading gantry in the western portion of the site, and
  • Six above ground storage tanks within a brick bund in the south east portion of the site with truck unloading points and pumps in the south-west portion of the bund and a concrete slab and drain adjacent to the south of the bund

The work also involved:

  • The removal of bonded asbestos contaminated materials primarily from the office building
  • The disconnection of services including communications, water, stormwater & sewer lines
  • The removal of all concrete and bitumen hardstand, footings & piers and disposal to waste transfer station for recycling
  • Installation of a new western boundary fence, and
  • The excavation and bioremediation of hydrocarbon contaminated soils as required
