Viva Energy commissioned Liberty Industrial to remove a redundant 70m single span pipe bridge at the former Clyde Refinery. The bridge had been out of service for some years and required removal due to extensive corrosion and some missing steel members.
Robust solutions
- A skilled project team carried out extensive liaising with several government regulatory authorities.
- We utilised 3D modelling simulation software and conducted extensive structural assessments of the bridge to determine the correct methodology.
- Engaged a specialist rope access team.
- Conducted rigorous subcontractor review to select dismantling contractor and naval architect to draw safe lifting plans.
- Tested all pipelines to confirm they were free from potential hydrocarbon residue or explosive gases.
- Sourced appropriate cranes and equipment to lift the bridge onto a barge, floating it down Duck River and landing it at the refinery wharf using a combination of mobile cranes.
- The team processed the dismantled load with a 36t excavator, including a third member shear attachment. This allowed for efficient processing of the 50t of tubular structural steel, cutting it into manageable sections for loading into the waiting transport for disposal.
Exceptional outcomes
The demobilisation of the barge was completed in the agreed two-week time frame and the area was handed back to the client free from hazard.
Liberty Industrial was awarded Winner in the ‘Contract of the Year under USD 1M category at the 2016 World Demolition Awards.
