Project Scope

Liberty Industrial was chosen to perform a complex demolition and asbestos removal process within an operating facility under extremely stringent conditions and to the highest BHP Billiton safety standards.

Liberty Industrial was sole sourced for this highly technical industrial demolition project due to our experience, equipment, personnel and above all our impeccable safety record and procedures for complex demolition projects. Our experience on countless projects in small and difficult to access areas enabled us to complete this project on time, on budget and without incident.

The task included the removal of asbestos wrapped pipes from within pipe racks. Asbestos gaskets were also removed from valves in the demolition zone. The demolition required the removal of approximately 500 tonnes of machinery, cooling tower structures and highly selective plant and equipment.

Our Approach

Prior to the commencement of any demolition work commencing, all asbestos contaminated pipework and vessels within the demolition zone had to be removed. This was completed using various techniques with the 'glove bag' method being the most effective for the pipework removal. Upon completion of the asbestos removal we were then able to systematically cut and remove selected plant and equipment. For this stage we used hand cutting techniques along with our 35 tonne excavators with shear and grapple attachments.

We also employed the services of a 160 tonne crane to lift out heavy plant items weighing in excess of 25 tonne. When the low lying areas of the plant were cleared we were then able to demolish the larger cooling structures and fan units by cutting/weakening and pulling to the ground in a controlled manner.

Once the structures were on the ground the scrap steel could be processed into manageable sections using the shear attachment then recycled off site.

Upon completion of the infrastructure demolition the concrete slabs, plinths and foundations were demolished using a hydraulic hammer attachment and the rubble materials were removed from the site for recycling at an approved landfill facility.

Finally, upon completion of all work, the entire footprint was remediated and clean compactable fill was placed and graded enabling the area to be used by the client as a laydown yard for future expansion and shutdown works.
