The project involved asbestos removal and demolition of five medium density warehouses requiring steel demolition works to enable subsequent development of the site. Asbestos removal works involved the removal of roofing materials including roof sheeting, guttering, downpipes, ridge capping and fascia.
Comprehensive decontamination of all areas was undertaken on a full-time basis during the works within fully encapsulated work areas. Liberty Industrial worked closely with the client to ensure all asbestos was identified, recorded and subsequently removed and disposed of offsite at appropriately EPA licenced waste disposal facilities.
Stringent control measures were implemented to control airborne dust to mitigate any effect on adjoining residences. Over 13,000m² of asbestos roofing was removed using a combination of scissor lifts and knuckle booms from within the warehouses, resulting n the remediation of 332 tonnes of asbestos containing materials. Ultimately the whole site received the relevant clearances with works carried out in accordance with all relevant statutory requirements, standards, codes and guidelines.
A major challenge was the summer heat. Daytime temperatures often reached 35°C or more which was compounded by another 10°C radiating off the roofs and an additional 12°C from working in full encapsulated asbestos remediation suits. Despite these challenges, works were completed on time and without incident.
Minor variation works added to the scope of works as the project progressed included removal of asbestos bituminous roof membranes, asbestos internal walls and the supply and installation of crash barriers.
A total of 650 tonnes of steel, aluminium and other non-ferrous metals have been recycled.
Following the successful completion of the Autonexus Facilty demolition project in February 2019, Liberty Industrial were instructed to commence preparation works for the next stage of the demolition works, with the project to commence in April 2019. The culmination of which will see 33 storage tanks demolished using a combination of demolition and high-reach excavators.
