Liberty Industrial was commissioned to demolish and remove a redundant stacker, tripper and Reclaimer 3 at the Nelson Point facility. The task also included the demolition of conveyors, transfer towers, rail lines, and all footings and cyclone tie downs.
The stacker and reclaimer were both demolished using induced collapse techniques. The collapse of each structure was initiated using explosives. The resulting lower height of the structures enabled them to be demolished using a 70 tonne excavator with third member shear.
The tripper structure was demolished using a 70 tonne excavator with a shear.
The scrap was processed and handled using 46 tonne and 38 tonne excavators with grab, bucket and hammer attachments which were also used to break up and remove the footings.
A 40 tonne dump truck was used to move concrete and steel around site. Large sections of raised conveyors over roads were lifted down using 250 tonne mobile crane. All the steel was processed to export grade on-site, and transported directly to Port Hedland port for export.
In all approximately 2,500 tonne of concrete was removed including approximately 1800 tonne of steel.
