The recent NSW Bushfires resulted in the destruction of thousands of properties throughout NSW. Over 2,399 homes have been destroyed and more than 10,000 buildings damaged or destroyed.
Funded by the NSW Government, Liberty Industrial have been engaged via Laing O’Rourke to demolish bushfire impacted properties and safely remove and dispose of the resultant debris. The clean-up is Australia’s largest natural disaster recovery project.
The clean-up efforts involve the removal of hazardous materials, including asbestos, the removal of materials destroyed by bush fire, the removal of hazardous trees, and the removal of concrete slab foundations.
Liberty Industrial have initially commenced works in the Bega Valley Shire, mobilising several hazardous materials removal and demolition work crews to the bushfire ravaged region. Up to this point, Liberty Industrial has been situated in the Bega Valley Shire Region, however there is potential for additional works in other localities and potential for new work crews being assigned to the clean-up project.
Laing O’Rourke requested that Liberty Industrial assign four separate work crews to the clean-up. Two of the work groups have been assigned specifically to asbestos affected properties, while different teams have been allocated to the tidy up of non-asbestos affected properties.
The scope of work includes testing and analysis of contaminated site surveys followed by removal and remediation, site validation sampling and testing followed by the safe removal of contaminants, removing bush fire damaged materials and fallen trees, the removal of driveways which could impact the safety of the clean-up and the removal of concrete slab foundations.
Testing will be carried out by qualified Occupational Hygienists on all properties to ensure communities already impacted by fire are not exposed to contamination, and workers are not exposed to any hazardous materials.
The project presents the added challenge of working in close proximity to neighbourhood residents. Liberty Industrial are working closely with Laing O’Rourke and the impacted local communities to ensure that all community stakeholder expectations are met.
Liberty Industrial are aiming to work with as many local subcontractors and small businesses as possible in the delivery of the project to provide much needed support for the local economies of the affected communities.
The project provides Liberty Industrial with a valuable opportunity to assist NSW communities in the rebuilding process. The clean-up is an essential step towards moving on and rebuilding for individuals and communities devastated by the bushfires and Liberty Industrial is committed to safely demolishing and remediating the impacted properties as quickly and as safely as possible.
