Liberty Industrial is currently in the final stages of the West Wallsend Pit Top Demolition Project. The project involved the removal of the redundant infrastructure at Oceanic Coal’s site in West Wallsend, NSW. The main works were technically complex due to the requirement to work around live plant, an extensive salvage scope and the presence of asbestos in the buildings to be demolished. Liberty Industrial utilised specialist demolition machinery and highly trained operatives to complete the works without injury.
The scope of works included several items of significance which were required to be salvaged prior to the demolition works commencing. These items were relocated using a combination of cranes and telehandlers and stored in a laydown area on Oceanic Coal’s site for reuse or sale. Several of the structures contained asbestos which needed to be removed prior to the demolition works as per the relevant state legislation. The removal of these asbestos containing materials was undertaken by Liberty Industrial’s specialist in-house asbestos removal team.
The project involved two technically complex elements which required an engineered solution to complete the works safely. In collaboration with our structural consultant Liberty designed induced collapses for both the 30 meter high inclined conveyor and the 2000T Product Bin. Both structures were brought to the ground as anticipated and without any complications. Once the major structures had been collapsed Liberty Industrial utilised specialist demolition machinery to downsize the steel and concrete components.
A 70t Volvo excavator equipped with a third member, rotating, hydraulic shear demolished the remaining aboveground infrastructure and downsized the steel for export while a fleet of 36t machines with hydraulic hammer and bucket attachments removed and processed the concrete footings. The final stage of the works included the loading out of all demolition materials and making good of the site with minor earthworks. The site was scanned with a magnet to ensure all steel was removed, and track-rolled by excavators to ensure that it was uniformly graded. Upon completion of the project, the site was handed over to the client for redevelopment.
